Lara Fener Apartment Renovation: About the Project

In this apartment in Fener, almost no layer was left untouched apart from the load-bearing structure. Floor finishes, plaster, electrical and sanitary installations, the bathrooms and the kitchen were all rebuilt; a few non-load-bearing partition walls were removed to turn the living area into a single volume.

The comparisons show the bathrooms stripped back to the bare blockwork. That was not a cosmetic choice but a necessity: the existing waterproofing and pipework had reached the end of their life, and renewing the surfaces while leaving the substructure would have surfaced as a problem in the flat below within a few years. The lines were replaced, pressure tested, and only then closed up.

A warm neutral palette runs through the material language. Wood-look flooring continues without interruption across the apartment and meets travertine-textured tiles at the corridor and bathroom thresholds. In the kitchen, a dark wood cabinet scheme is balanced by a veined stone splashback. The master bathroom uses black mosaic and brass fittings, the second bathroom grey tiles and a black-framed shower enclosure.

Lighting was built in layers rather than around a single central fitting: linear runs in the ceiling, concealed strips inside cabinets and panels, separate circuits around the mirrors. The wardrobes, entrance unit, headboard panels and laundry shelving were all made to measure.

Visible technical detail was kept to a minimum. The air conditioning refrigerant and drain lines were routed inside the walls; the supply and discharge paths of the indoor units were planned together with the suspended ceiling and cabinet lines, so no duct or flexible hose is visible anywhere. The drain falls were checked before anything was closed up — in Antalya the air conditioning runs for most of the year, so a mistake on that line becomes a problem that returns every summer.

In the kitchen the appliances were resolved as part of the joinery. Bosch built-in appliances were integrated into the cabinet system; the fridge and dishwasher were clad with matching doors so that the run reads continuously, and the oven and microwave were aligned within a tall unit. The niche dimensions and ventilation clearances of every appliance were drawn into the design before manufacturing began. A Franke sink was chosen and set flush with the worktop, without a drainer; the tap and the waste separation unit were solved inside the same module.
